We have truly had a fantastic day relaxing and enjoying all
that Coober Pedy has to offer. Sleeping in and a hearty pancake breakfast we
started our day off late in the morning. Saying goodbye to our fellow Tassie friends
and wishing them well on the remainder of their travels.
We starting the day
off visiting the Old timers mine, a fabulous introduction into Opal mining, and
great for the kids to be able to see how some people make a living here in
Coober Pedy. We were also lucky enough to visit a “digout” an underground house.
Finishing the self guided tour, we checked out the beautiful Opals in the shop
before heading for the “noodling pit” to
try our luck at finding some Opal.
Success was had and small raw opal stones
were found. The kids were so excited (and secretly so too were the big kids).
From here we decided a bite to eat was
in order and headed for the underground café; before making our way out to the
public noodling pits to have a second attempt at find Opal. Whilst much more
difficult due to the sheer size of the pits and amount of dirt. We were lucky
enough to find a few pale coloured opals.

Exhausted and ready to get out of the dirt, we decided to hop in the car and head out to the Breakaways, the famous dog fence and the ‘Moonplains’. Coober Pedy and its surrounding land is extremely bizarre. Difficult to say in word why this is so, but hopefully the photos will provide some insight into this strange but beautiful place.

To pack up again, tomorrow sees us heading down to Port Augusta. Here’s hoping we make it uneventfully and in time to be able to purchase the much needed part for our beloved trailer.
