After doing the household duties like washing clothes and homework for Krystian we headed off to visit the few tourist attractions that bring people to the historic Cooktown AKA Captain James Cook. We visited the James Cook museum. It was brilliant. Set in Cooktown's historic Convent and boarding school for girls the museum touched on all of Cooktown's history including its first discovery by "white people", the aboriginal heritage, the Gold Rush and the Chinese. It is crazy to think that 30,000 people once lived in Cooktown when it was a buzz by the Gold rush.
From the Museum, we headed down to the water front where the crew of the Endeavor first walked on Australian soil. There are many monuments and statues along the waterfront that are significant to this day back in 1770.
There was a really cool musical ship down at the waterfront for kids to play on. The kids would have enjoyed it more if they weren't tired and hungry.
From here we ventured up to Cook's Lookout. It would have been so much more enjoyable if it wasn't for the gusty wind! Still a beautiful view though.
The remainder of the day was spent resting, swimming and trying to figure out the "Dry communities" for the no alcohol zoning! It is very confusing; and no body wants to take responsibility for giving out information about it. We finally managed to get an answer after speaking to the local police, information center and the hotline (all of course gave us different answers). The fines for carrying alcohol through exclusion zones are HUGE. first offence $37,000 no joke!! Very important information to find out.
Tomorrow sees us heading off up the beaten track (all be it freshl graded) and on our way to the Tip of the Cape. We are very excited. Anyone would think Maciek was excited to be going somewhere this afternoon. The car was packed, camera's recharged and all ready to go by 3 o'clock. I did have a little chuckle to myself.
